Wikipedia is a project operated by the non-profit organization, Wikimedia Foundation, and created and maintained by a strong community of 100,000 international volunteers. Founded in 2001 by Jimmy Wales, Wikipedia has become a top five global Web property, according to comScore, but more, it’s become an indispensable part of our daily lives.

The project is committed to the development of free encyclopedias in all languages of the world and keeping them free and available for everyone, forever. The project currently offers more than ten million articles in 250 languages. Virtually anyone with Internet access is free to contribute, by providing neutral, cited information.

Wikipedia is ad-free and is protected by donations from the public. Lots of people love Wikipedia, but surprisingly few know it's run by a non-profit.
