Ubuntu Hall of Fame 8:31pm
pJono Bacon has a href=http://www.jonobacon.org/?p=1407announced/a the creation of the a href=http://hall-of-fame.ubuntu.com/Ubuntu Hall of Fame/a. It is an effort to recognize contributors that make the Ubuntu community a success./p
p align=centera href=http://hall-of-fame.ubuntu.com/img src=http://fridge.ubuntu.com/files/3043417233_d03fe3e877.jpg//a/p
pWith such a large community working on 5-A-Days, LoCos, translations, upstream bug triage, the sponsorship queue, Launchpad, forums, and many other projects, some contributors can be recognized by specific hard numbers, some may contribute in a range of projects that cannot be measured statistically. The Hall of Fame will highlight both types of work./p
pA number of boxes appear on the Hall of Fame:/p
p align=centerimg src=http://fridge.ubuntu.com/files/3043449187_32e63a4b92_o.jpg/p
pEach box contains data for a specific topic, a description detailing what the data shows, ways to find more related data, and a link to a page that outlines how to get involved in that part of the community./p
pAnother part of the Hall Of Fame is the Featured Contributor. Contributors doing excellent work around the community will be highlighted. Here, a little blurb will cover what they have done, their achievements and their personality. To show your appreciation for a contributors work, it is possible to #8220;Thank#8221; them. By clicking on a Thank button, the Hall Of Fame will look up your Launchpad account and add your profile picture to the blurb. This makes it easy to show featured contributors that you appreciate their work!/p
pWhen thinking about who we would showcase for the first Featured Contributor, one of the first names that sprung to mind was a href=http://boredandblogging.comNick Ali/a, an excellent contributor and friend to everyone. Go and check out the Featured Contributor article about him./p

pOne South African a href=http://www.denhamcoote.com/aboutUbuntu fan/a, Denham Coote, took a big step into showing his commitment to the ubuntu concept by getting an a href=http://www.denhamcoote.com/inkedUbuntu circle of friends tattoo/a. The Fridge caught up with him to find out what inspired him to do this./p
p a href=http://www.denhamcoote.com/inkedimg src=http://fridge.ubuntu.com/files/denham-tat_fridge.jpg alt=Tattoo Pic //a/p
pstrongFridge: Is the tattoo real?/strong/p
pDenham: Sure is./p
pstrongFridge: Getting that tattoo is a big commitment. What does the Ubuntu logo mean to you?/strong/p
pDenham: Well, apart from being a great design, I really love what it stands for. The ideals of the Ubuntu/Linux/open source community. The ideas of sharing, caring, acceptance, diversity, giving back, acknowledgement, working towards a greater good, etc. ubuntu.com sums it up wonderfully - ‘Humanity to others’, or ‘I am what I am because of who we all are’/p
pstrongFridge: When did you make the final decision to do this? Was it a difficult decision? How long did you think about it?/strong/p
pDenham: I#8217;ve often wondered and toyed with the idea of getting a tattoo, but have always found reason not to. It#8217;s permanent. It should have meaning, etc. Last Wednesday I was out with my mate Kay (the tattoo artist) discussing the general idea. The next day, after thinking about it a little, I realised that these are values that can (and should) apply anytime, all the time. Regardless of what OS I run, regardless of whether or not Ubuntu Linux exists. That said, yes, I run Ubuntu!/p
pstrongFridge: Do you know of others you have inspired to do the same? What has the general feedback been from your friends and family?/strong/p
pDenham: No one else so far. It#8217;s interesting in that non-geeks simply see it as a cool design. Geeks will either shake their head and call me mad, or will think it#8217;s really cool. So far the only negative feedback has been from the 12 year old commenters on Digg who get off on showing their ignorance :)/p
pstrongFridge: Have your parents seen it? What did they say?/strong/p
pI showed my dad right after. I grew up in a household where tattoos were a big no-no. After explaining the meaning, he seems to have accepted it, even offering to help clean it up (when it was still very fresh)./p

Today
img class=face src=http://planet.ubuntu.com/heads/lmanul.png alt=
pI#8217;ve been thrilled and overwhelmed by the amazing feedback we got on Gmail Themes. Countless blog posts, articles, etc. I enjoyed monitoring a href=http://search.twitter.com/search?q=gmail+themeswhat people said on Twitter/a in real time./p
pI am equally thrilled to see that a lot of people are loving my #8220;Zoozimps#8221; characters./p
pa href=http://www.manucornet.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/inbox.pngimg class=alignnone size-medium wp-image-61 title=A Zoozimp src=http://www.manucornet.net/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/11/inbox-197x300.png alt= width=197 height=300 //a/p
pIt used to return exactly 0 result in Google (one of the reasons why I chose the name in the first place), now just a day after our launch a href=http://www.google.com/search?q=zoozimpsmany results have appeared/a img src=http://www.manucornet.net/blog/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif alt=:-) class=wp-smiley / /p
pThanks to all who welcomed this with really positive feedback, and thanks to Google for allowing me to be part of such an exciting project./p
img class=face src=http://planet.ubuntu.com/heads/keescook.png alt=
pThere#8217;s this great CPU feature called #8220;a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_bitnx/a#8221; #8212; it protects your computer from intrusion by blocking execution of memory regions that weren#8217;t expected to be executable (i.e. stack/heap data). You really want this enabled. Unfortunately for you, it seems some BIOSes default to disabling it. On Dell laptops, look under #8220;Security#8221; / #8220;CPU XD Support#8221;: you want it enabled. In an American Megatrends BIOS, I found it under #8220;CPU Features#8221; / #8220;Execute Disable Bit#8221;: you want it enabled./p
pAs far as making use of the CPU feature once it#8217;s not disabled in the BIOS, you#8217;re already using it if you#8217;re running a 64bit kernel. And if you#8217;re using 32bit, you can start using it if you install the code-server/code flavor of the 32bit kernel. As a bonus, you get to a href=http://www.outflux.net/blog/archives/2007/09/27/stupid-bios-tricks-to-find-your-4g-of-ram/address all your physical RAM/a if you do this too (since -server#8217;s #8220;a href=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Physical_Address_ExtensionPAE/a#8221; mode is the kernel mode that allows #8220;nx#8221; to work). For Ubuntu Jaunty, I#8217;m hoping to get some element of the system (installer? jockey?) to a href=https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/use-pae-when-possiblemake the right kernel selection/a for a given system./p
pIf #8220;pae#8221; is in your /proc/cpuinfo flags:br /
code
pre
$ grep --color pae /proc/cpuinfo
flags : fpu vme de pse tsc msr strongpae/strong mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov \
pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe syscall emnx/em lm constant_tsc \
arch_perfmon pebs bts rep_good nopl pni monitor ds_cpl vmx est tm2 ssse3 cx16 xtpr lahf_lm
/pre
p/p/code(note the #8220;nx#8221; in there too, since my BIOS isn#8217;t set to disable it)/p
pThen you almost certainly want to use code-server/code kernel flavor:br /
code
pre
sudo apt-get install linux-server linux-restricted-modules-server
/pre
p/p/code/p

divpLately I've been spending more time microblogging on a href=http://identi.ca/jorgeidenti.ca/a.
pOne of my friend's does a a href=http://www.chasingnuts.com/2008/twitter-weekly-updates-for-2008-11-16/weekly status/a of his twitter updates to his blog, but I am not convinced if that is useful for people or not./p
