‘Uthmān ibn ‘Affān (Arabic: عثمان بن عفان) (c. 580 - July 17, 656) was a sahaba (companion) . An early convert to Islam, he played a major role in early Islamic history, most notably as the third Caliph of the Rashidun Empire (644 to death) and the compilation of the Qur'an. Revered by Sunni Muslims as one of the Rashidun (four rightly guided Caliphs) of Islam, he is highly criticized by the Shia Muslims.
