A first for Frankfurt
New Grand Hyatt in Frankfurt, Frankfurt, Germany

Ben van Berkel's UNStudio has been chosen as the winner in a design competition for Grand Hyatt tower, a hotel tower set to soar in Frankfurt.

According to Ben van Berkel the design for the Grand Hyatt tower celebrates and highlights the cosmopolitan character and diversity of Frankfurt: "It has three different elevations that are linked to the different aspects of the city. The tower takes up the variation and diversity offered by the city of Frankfurt and reflects that multiplicity of experiences back to the city itself. The tower can be perceived differently from each perspective; it appears needle-thin from one spot, strong and straight from another, and complex with a slight twist from yet another.”

The new tower will house a 5-star-plus hotel with 405 rooms and suites, a ballroom, spa, various restaurants, a lobby bar and a public Sky Lounge on the top floor, and the possibility of an adjacent congress center. The hotel tower consists of 30 floors at a height of approximately 110 metres and an area of 54,562.70 m2 for the hotel tower + plinth.

The new hotel will be located opposite the currently emerging high-rise office Tower 185. At the entrance of the European quarter, at the Friedrich-Ebert-Anlage, Vivico has been building Tower 185 since September 2008; the first skyscraper at this location.

The competition jury chairman Prof. Eisele pointed out: "All the proposals were of an exceptionally high standard. The award-winning designs by UNStudio and Kohn, Pedersen Fox are particularly outstanding as they present a type of high-rise which does not yet exist in this form in Frankfurt. The contribution by UNStudio demonstrates how harmony can be created between extensive functional demands and the high requirements of exterior and interior design."

UN Studio to build dramatic pavilion in NYC
New Amsterdam Plein & Pavilion., New York, New York, United States

Dutch architect Ben van Berkel has been selected to design a 5,000 sq ft pavilion in NYC to mark the occasion of the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York Harbor. To be built at Battery Park in Lower Manhattan, the New Amsterdam Plein and Pavilion, as it is named, will be unique among the city’s many public spaces – a landscaped intermodal transportation hub of the 21st century, where bicycles, buses, the subway and water transportation intersect with cultural offerings in a singular expression of daring but lyrical design.

The pavilion, whose form has been likened to an “X”, a flower opening and a windmill depending on ones point of view, will have openings on three of four sides and house an information center, café and restrooms. The materials have not yet been selected, but van Berkel told the Architect’s Newspaper that it would be white with a changing LED display.

To be permanently installed by September, the pavilion is expected to spruce up and enliven the Peter Minuit Plaza, a highly trafficked area that receives 5 million people annually, including 70,000 daily commuters.

New York-based Handle Associates is the local architect for the project.

RETREAT, Asperen, Netherlands

On June 28th the exhibition RETREAT at KunstFort Asperen will be open to the public. Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos invited 12 artists to exhibit works which provide surprising interpretations on the theme of RETREAT from differing disciplines and perspectives.

Participating artists are: Tobias Rehberger, Frank Havermans, Ann Lislegaard, Pipilotti Rist, Absalon, Andrea Zittel, A.P. Komen/Karen Murphy, COSMIC WONDER, Jerszy Seymour, Lucy Orta, Hans op de Beeck and Sandra Backlund.

For Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos the KunstFort Asperen and its surroundings was the starting point for the theme RETREAT. The fortress has lost its original function, whereby the perception of place and space has changed. This transition from defense post to idyllic place forms the premise of the exhibition. The theme, although reflecting today’s socio-economic realities, was in fact chosen prior to the current global crisis.

According to Ben van Berkel and Caroline Bos: "Each in their own way has invented solutions for people in need of a refuge. But each also shows that the solution and the situation you seek to escape are interwoven, and that there is a painful fragility to the human that no shelter can cover up."

UNStudio has designed a spatial installation which reinterprets the organization of the fort and forms the binding element between the exhibited works. The structure winds through the fort like a ribbon, playing with the changing perceptions and experiences of the space, both literally and symbolically. The material and the diamond structure of the installation reflect the exhibited artworks which are installed around the fort.

The RETREAT exhibition is open from 28th June to 20th September, Tuesdays to Sundays (10.00 to 17.00)
