Catatan Centre for Orangutan Protection: Dire condition: Orangutan in West Kalimantan BKSDA’s shelter
Dire condition: Orangutan in West Kalimantan BKSDA’s shelter
An orangutan submitted by Pontianak citizen to West Kalimantan’s Agency of Conservancy and Natural Resources (BKSDA) is now ailing. Jojo, the orangutan, is now in fever and very weak. If no help is arriving soon, the orangutan could pass away anytime. The Centre for Orangutan Protection (COP) has observed that there has been not even one BKSDA staff to take care and feed the orangutan.
It has been often happened that the West Kalimantan BKSDA neglect evacuated or confiscated orangutans. Four orangutans that had been brought to Pontianak’s Agro Park had died due to poor treatment. The management, who was considered by the government as conservation agency, did not have the knowledge and capabilities of standard animal welfare, while the West Kalimantan BKSDA was mainly neglecting the orangutans submitted under their care. Similar situation is also occurring with the Sinka Zoo in Singkawang. The West Kalimantan BKSDA did not conduct any observation and management supervision on the orangutans entrusted to them. Worst conditions occurred in Pancur Aji, Sanggau city. Three young orangutans are now imprisoned in a small cage without access to fresh water and food.
The BKSDA also ignored offers of help to solve problems faced in cases of illegal possession of orangutans. The Centre for Orangutan Protection has been many times offering a full support to build and manage orangutan shelters. Supports offered also covers law enforcement and orangutan rescue operations. These offers of help were based by the fact that illegal possession and zero law enforcement in West Kalimantan were caused by no facilities and resources of shelters for confiscated orangutans.
“It is all clear that the West Kalimantan BKSDA has no willingness to operate their duty to as a responsible public authority in orangutans conservancy. If they do not have the guts to enforce the law, then they can at least respect the help offered by the society who care for orangutan conservancy. Take good care of the orangutans entrusted by the society, do not neglect them. This is almost like gradually killing them,” said Seto Hari Wibowo, Orangutan Campaigner from the Centre for Orangutan Protection.
In May 2009, the Centre for Orangutan Protection submitted a list of illegal orangutan possession to the West Kalimantan BKSDA. A number of orangutans were reported in a critical condition due to malnutrition and ailment such as blindness and paralyzed condition. They need rapid actions to save them. The Centre for Orangutan Protection has sent medical team to treat them and to share knowledge to their owners to bring their orangutans to West Kalimantan BKSDA. It is ironic that the society’s awareness on orangutan conservancy is increasing at the time while the West Kalimantan BKSDA is still unable to grasp the conception.
